The Night Burns With Fear

Tremoring in foxholes

bleeding rabbits hide their eyes
while the foxes circle

A phoenix blazes from the sky
burning the night to ash

the ashes of fear are choking us
the ashes of fear cover us
in the quiet blanket of gray amnesia

The rabbits hide their eyes
burrowing in the bed of ashes
and beg for forgetfulness
while fires still smolder with memory

The foxes circle and whisper,
"do not fear children,
you are safe with us."

Flowers

When I place your flowers in,

if a cavern awaits inside,
the womb of earth to swallow light
and breed in darkness,
will I remain the person
of degrees and blood and flesh?

Cat Dreams

I wonder,

does he dream of savanna?
In sleep does he still kill?
Does he long for the scent of terror
and the tense of muscles in chase,
the wind in his face while stalking the grass?
A descendant of African kings,
does he dream of blood in his jaws?
